JOHN MUIR COLLEGE CLASS OF 2026
COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES
JUNE 14, 2026
Out in the mountains
animal howls in the sky flatten
& diffuse. I forgot silence,
like hands cupped over
ears, huge swath of valleys
of silence, makes its own
skin.
— Tommy Pico, IRL
Tommy “Teebs” Pico is a poet, artist, and tv writer. He is author of the books IRL, Nature Poem, Junk, Feed, and has written on the shows Reservation Dogs, Resident Alien and Crystal Lake. He is originally from the Viejas Indian reservation of the Kumeyaay nation. He spoke at the historic 2020 Pandemic Class Commencement for Muir College.
Muir College is founded on two ideals: human stewardship of the environment and the power of the independent spirit. We acknowledge the Kumeyaay, Cahuilla, Cupeño, and Payómkawichum peoples, who are the present-day Native nations of San Diego County, and who have upheld these commitments since time immemorial.
